Sabina Olive Oil Museum: art that tells the story of oil in the village of Castelnuovo di Farfa
In Castelnuovo di Farfa you do not simply visit a museum — you explore an entire village. The Museo dell'olio della Sabina (Sabina Olive Oil Museum) is an all-inclusive itinerary that weaves together contemporary art and history to celebrate the thousand-year-old culture of Sabina DOP olive oil. The idea, conceived in 2001, has turned the village itself into an exhibition area, telling the story of this land's liquid gold in a truly unique way.
A route going through the heart of the village
The visit begins at the town hall, inside the Renaissance Palazzo Perelli. From there you descend into an ancient 18th-century olive press, perfectly preserved, where you discover how olives were pressed using animal power. The route then continues through the narrow lanes, touching the old communal oven and the remains of the medieval church of San Donato (St Donatus), once abandoned.
Art that recounts a tradition
But this is not merely a museum of objects. It is a different kind of experience. Each stop is enriched by the installations of contemporary artists who have expressed their idea of the olive oil culture. And so the story of a local product of excellence speaks a language that everyone can understand, blending past and present in a surprising way.
The museum is open at weekends — Friday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays, with the exception of Christmas and New Year's Day — from 10:00 to 18:00. If you prefer the quieter weekdays, it is possible to arrange a visit by making a specific request. The meeting point for the start of the route is Palazzo Perelli, in Viale Regina Margherita.
