Former Zucchi barracks Reggio Emilia

Overview

The large neoclassical building that today overlooks Viale Allegri was commissioned by the Duke of Modena Francesco IV in 1845 as a Boarium Forum used, that is, for the conservation of the annona reserves and as the headquarters of the livestock market.

The work was completed in 1853 and, as early as 1854, the soldiers stationed in the Citadel Palace were temporarily transferred here until, in 1877, the building was finally used as barracks and remained so until 1957.

In subsequent years, the municipality used it as an exhibition space for the Civic Museums and as the headquarters of the \'Achille Peri\' Music Institute and the \'Catomes Tot\' Social Centre.

A major redevelopment project, begun in the 1990s, involved the complex, which has been home to the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia since 2005.

A truly important milestone in the history of this city that, since the 12th century, boasted a renowned university that lapsed in 1772, when it was stripped of the right to grant degrees, remaining active as a Lyceum and only able to grant professional degrees.
