About four kilometres from the historic centre of Ravenna, the Ancient Port is located at a key point on the Classe site: between the mouth of the ancient harbour-canal, a wide dune breach that fed the entire lagoon, including part of the island, and the commercial district adjacent to the southern bank of the canal. Covering an area of approximately 10,000 square metres, the itinerary offers visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the archaeological excavation, retracing the steps of those who used to work in the warehouses or who arrived by sea and docked at the port.
Starting with a multimedia room, the Visitor Centre features a virtual portrayal of a merchant from the period, who provides an introduction to the natural, geological, historical and archaeological aspects of the area, along with photographs and videos of Ravenna's most important monuments and historical reconstructions of the site.
The visit continues within the archaeological area, which features a road flanked by a series of warehouses, the foundations of which are still preserved today, and which were used for loading and unloading goods in ancient times. Along the route, screen-printed perspective panels have been installed, depicting an elevated reconstruction of the warehouses and the architectural features that are no longer present. These panels are superimposed on the surrounding landscape, offering visitors an immersive experience of what the complex must have looked like in the 5th–6th centuries.
The route also includes a footbridge that connected the two sections of the harbour canal, while several viewpoints offer the opportunity to admire the site from different perspectives, providing a varied view of the archaeological remains.
