Overview
Val d’Enza Castle stands with its imposing keep in the centre of Montecchio Emilia. Inside, you can find evidence of the town’s history, from Longobard tombs to Risorgimento weapons.
The Fortress stands on an area that has been inhabited since Roman and barbarian times. Meanwhile, the fortified core dates back to the Matildic period, as evidenced by a document signed by Countess Matilda of Canossa dated 1114. During the following centuries, the castle was used as a military structure.
Recent archaeological excavations in the basement brought to light the ancient foundations of the castle and a large Carolingian burial ground (8th-10th centuries). The eastern part of the dungeon contains a gunboat and two intact graves. Making your way up from the basement, you will find the Torre pontaia tower that housed the guardhouse and the original entrance gate to the fortress where you can still see the mooring point of the drawbridge. The main floor houses the library with a coffered ceiling and a majestic 17th-century chapel. Inside the Torrione is a fascinating fresco depicting a Madonna Enthroned with Child and Saints, a Gothic painting in the style of Giotto.
