Overview
From 15 November 2025 to 10 May 2026, the Santa Caterina Museum will host "From Picasso to Van Gogh – Stories of Painting from Abstraction to Impressionism", an exhibition that brings more than sixty works to Europe for the first time from the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio, one of the most important centres for twentieth-century art.
The exhibition is an extraordinary journey back in time, a journey through art from 20th-century American abstractionism to European impressionism, in a constant exchange across the Atlantic. Through extraordinary masterpieces of landscapes, portraits, figures in settings, and still lifes, the venue seeks to understand how abstraction emerged and where it began.
The exhibition combines works by Piet Mondrian and Ad Reinhardt, the geometric designs of Josef Albers, the landscapes of William Merritt Chase, extending to the works of Cézanne, Monet and Gauguin. The tour concludes with Vincent van Gogh’s famous painting Wheat Fields with Reaper, Auvers, to which the last exhibition hall is entirely dedicated.
