Preggio

Overview

The picturesque village of Preggio is located near the border with the municipality of Passignano sul Trasimeno and is surrounded by an unspoilt natural environment. Here you can admire the remains of the ancient fortress, whose prominent location made it one of the main bastions in the Perugina area and the Upper Tiber Valley.

Also worth visiting is the Church of the Holy Trinity and St Francis (1223), where you can see a gilded silver reliquary containing a "Holy Thorn", and the Church of Our Lady of Grace (dating back to 1400), where you can see an inspiring Renaissance altar and a fresco attributed to Pinturicchio. From the Col di Campana pine forest, there is a magnificent view of Lake Trasimeno, a scene of rare beauty.

Preggio is also known for the Preggio Music Festival, a prestigious event with chamber music and opera, organised in July and August.

Nearby, along the road to Preggio, is the castle of Romeggio, built in mediaeval times and once a refuge for the "Romei", pilgrims who travelled to holy places. A short distance away is another castle, Polgeto, built in 1399 and still considered one of the best preserved fortresses in Umbria.
