Trequanda

Overview

The village of Trequanda stands on a hill surrounded by a landscape of great beauty, amidst the intense green of the woods, the cultivation of olive trees and rows of vines. The heart of the town is enclosed in the ancient defensive walls, almost completely intact, and two of the three gates that allowed access to the town, Porta al Sole and Porta al Leccio, remain intact. The fulcrum and symbol of Trequanda's mediaeval past is the Cacciaconti Castle, with its cylindrical tower and Italian-style garden, while outside the centre, a must-see is the dovecote dating back to the end of the 18th century, a very rare building of its kind that can be reached by crossing a splendid wood of holm oaks and cypresses. And, to end one's journey into the soul of this village, the two hamlets, many hills apart but united by history and identity, are worth a visit: Castelmuzio, a village of olive groves, and Petroio, a small terracotta capital.
