Montepulciano

Overview

Discovery history, food and wine in the Sienese hills

The municipality of Montepulciano, in the province of Siena, is one of Italy’s best known and most renowned villages. The town is known throughout the world for producing Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which has a very ancient history and which you can taste inside the Fortezza di Montepulciano, headquarters of the Consorzio vino Nobile. Complement your wine with a delicious traditional dish of pici or pappardelle with hare or wild boar ragout.

Its historical centre is enclosed by medieval walls. Starting from Piazza Grande, the heart of the village, discover the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built in the 17th century. Then take a visit to the Palazzo Comunale, commissioned by Cosimo I de’ Medici, whose tower enables you to enjoy a splendid panorama: if the weather is clear, you can see Perugia, Subasio, Lake Trasimeno and its islands, and the lakes of Montepulciano and Chiusi. Outside the city walls stands the Church of San Biagio, built at the bottom of the hill and surrounded by a large meadow.

For those in search of relaxation, Sant’Albino is home to the spa of Terme di Montepulciano. Their waters, which have been used since the mid-16th century, have numerous beneficial and healing properties.
