Overview
Montignoso rises at the foot of the Apuan Alps and is surrounded by olive groves. The Aghinolfi Fortress watches over the village from a height overlooking the coast and the Porta Lake. Do not miss the nineteenth-century Villa Schiff Giorgini, surrounded by a splendid garden with centuries-old trees and marble sculptures of the Apuan Alps.
The Church of Sant'Eustachio dates back to the fifteenth century. It houses two panels from the fifteenth century attributed to the Master of the Tondo Lathrop and the Master of Stratonica and a fourteenth-century sculpture of the Pisan school that represents the Madonna. Even older is the Church of San Vito and San Modesto, built in the twelfth century. It preserves an altar triptych from 1482 by the Lucca painter Michele Ciampanti.
Just outside the center is Monte Pasquilio, loved by poets Giuseppe Ungaretti and Eugenio Montale. Come here for a spectacular view of the coast. If you love nature do not miss the wildlife oasis of Lake Porta. Then sit down at the table to enjoy Moroccan bread prepared with corn flour, black olives and chili pepper and Putta, a spicy savoury rice cake.
