Overview
After the Lombard foundation in 706 AD, the church and monastery passed from the Benedictines to the Franciscans, who inhabited it from 1216 to 1783. The hermitage and its surroundings were the site of fierce clashes between Germans and partisans during the Second World War. Today the hermitage, which has been restored several times, has returned to welcome pilgrims and walkers on the Via di Francesco, in search of silence, peace and spiritual recollection.
