Senales

Overview

The land of Ötzi in the Trentino mountains

Located in the autonomous province of Bolzano in Alto Adige, the small municipality of Senales dominates the valley of the same name, rich in history, culture and attractions. These include Juval Castle and its museum, perched on a hill at the valley’s entrance. The ancient medieval building was erected in 1250 and chosen as a summer residence by famous South Tyrolean mountaineer Reinhold Messner. The museum is dedicated to the myth of the mountain and exhibits, including a large collection of Tibetan relics and masks.

Another unmissable attraction in the area is the sensational archaeological site where Ötzi, the glacier mummy, was found. The ArcheoParc, the Valley's open-air archaeological museum, is educational and interactive, an ideal place to spend an afternoon with children immersed in history.

Finally, if you get the chance, take a guided tour of the Charterhouse of the Angels, a monastic centre active from 1326 to 1782: stroll through the cloisters and rooms imagining the angelic chants of the monks in prayer. The visit is bilingual, available in Italian and German.
