Pompu

Overview

In the valley of the Riu Laccus, or Riu de Pompu, amidst the soft hills among which the imposing Monte Futtu stands out, rises this small village, in a land of great geological interest: here, in fact, are the basal rocks of the nearby Monte Arci, including agates, carnelian and amethysts. A land of stone but also of verdant beauty, that of Pompu, surrounded by forests of downy oaks, holm oaks and cork oaks. There is still a legend linked to its name, which is said to derive from the Latin 'pompa: parade, procession': a small hillside sanctuary dedicated to Santa Maria di Monserrato is said to have attracted numerous pilgrims over time, some of whom would later settle here, creating the first nucleus of the village. Spirituality is still a central element of the village's identity, and one of the events that best represents it is the festival dedicated to the patron saint St. Sebastian, to whom ritual bonfires and the traditional procession are dedicated, giving rise to a timeless, intense and fascinating ritual every year.
