The second edition of the Ulassai Contemporary Art Biennial opens its doors on 21 March 2026, bringing life until 7 June to a Sardinian village that is already an open-air work of art in itself. A tribute to Maria Lai between past and future Entitled "Il significato dell'opera" (The meaning of the work), the exhibition is an act of love for the legacy of Maria Lai, the great Sardinian artist who was able to weave her community to the mountain with visible and invisible threads. Twenty artists and three curators of international standing engage in a dialogue with her poetics, building a bridge between the island's tradition and the visions of global contemporary art.
Two venues, one experience. The works are distributed between the Stazione dell'Arte – the reference museum for the art of Maria Lai – and the CaMuC – Casa Museo Cannas, a second exhibition centre in the heart of the historic centre. Site-specific installations, environmental interventions and works that blend with the limestone rock and the rugged landscape of Ogliastra: strolling through Ulassai during the Biennale means following a unique sensory path, where every corner hides a discovery. The village as a distributed museum Ulassai is not a conventional tourist destination: it is one of the most picturesque villages in inland Sardinia, perched between canyons and ancient caves. The Biennale transforms it into an open-air museum, perfect for those seeking an authentic immersion in Sardinian culture, far from crowded destinations. The pace is the slow one of a mindful journey: you walk, you observe, you stop to talk to the locals. The Biennale is promoted by the Municipality of Ulassai and the Stazione dell'Arte Foundation, with the organisation of Sémata Soc. Coop., as part of the project "Ulassai: where nature meets art".
