Standing imposingly at the entrance to Ardara, a village in Logudoro perched on the slopes of Montesanto, in the province of Sassari. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Kingdom is an exceptional monument, one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in Sardinia, notable for its unique appearance due to the jet-black trachyte "ferrigna" blocks used in its construction.
Inside, the austere dark stones create a breathtaking contrast with the gold of the main altarpiece, a masterpiece from 1515 that dominates the apse. Formerly the palace chapel of the judges of Torres, the church invites visitors to pause in silence and discover its artistic treasures, such as the 17th-century frescoes and the wooden Minor Altarpiece.
- Why visit: It is a unique place in Sardinia due to its scenic location, majesty and unusual dark building material. As well as being a masterpiece of Sardinian Romanesque architecture, it was the heart of the Judiciary of Torres: judges took their oaths on its altar and were buried here. It is a must-see destination for lovers of medieval history, architecture and sacred art.
- What to see in the surrounding area: A visit to Ardara is part of a journey through an area rich in history. Nearby, you can admire other important Romanesque churches such as Nostra Signora di Castro and the Basilica of Sant'Antioco di Bisarcio. Also not to be missed are the archaeological sites of the "Ozieri culture", such as the cave of San Michele, and other Nuragic and Roman remains.
- Useful services and advice: The church is an active place of worship, therefore appropriate clothing is recommended. Check the opening hours, especially during the off-season. With its procession on 9 May accompanied by sos gosos songs, the patron saint's festival is a truly fascinating event.
