Overview
Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club
Located close to the northern shores of Lake Maggiore, Trarego Viggiona consists of three villages, Trarego, Cheglio and Viggiona, situated beneath Mount Carza, with an enviable view of the lake. Highly rural, the three villages feature picturesque alleyways surrounded by the typical terraces where vines were grown. Trarego has several buildings of industrial archaeology, such as mills, a social dairy and a primitive hydroelectric power plant. Also worth seeing is the parish church dedicated to Saint Martin and the Museo Tattile (Tactile Museum), which enables visitors to explore the natural sciences of lakes and mountains. In Viggiona, it is worth visiting the Romanesque Chiesa Vecchia (Old Church), connected to the new Baroque parish church by a Via Crucis. Finally, Cheglio, with its ancient rural village vibe, features characteristic streets and the Oratory of San Rocco. There are many trails in the area that you can follow on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. In the area of Mount Carza, you can find a Big Bench (the largest on Lake Maggiore) with spectacular views, and the Wonderwood family adventure park. The area’s typical product par excellence is Viggiona Grappa, which can be enjoyed and bought at the distillery in Viggiona. Their special bottle labels bring to life the history of the village and its people. Also worth trying are the local cheeses from micro dairies in the area.
In terms of events, around Easter time, during the annual International Art Exhibition “Sentiero d 'Arte”, local houses and studios open their doors to artists. Also worthy of note are the Feast of Saint Eurosia, a religious event of great appeal held on the first Sunday of August, and Viggiona by Night, a gastronomical and musical event held in the village’s squares and streets in late July.
