Nature Reserve of Collemeluccio-Montedimezzo

Overview

Located close to Pescolanciano and Carovilli, together with the Montedimezzo reserve, it makes up the Man and Biosphere Reserve of Collemeluccio-Montedimezzo (an international designation awarded by UNESCO): 363 hectares of forest at an altitude of approximately 1000 m. The Reserve is almost entirely carpeted with trees, and developed between 900 and 1300. It is characterised by Austrian oaks below, and beech woods further up. There are also numerous other native species of tree including the Lobelius maple, the mountain maple, elm, chestnut, white hornbeam, ash, hazelnut and rowan. If you happen to take the Celano-Foggia trail that winds along the borders of the reserve, look out for the huge beech known as "King Faione".
