Overview
Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club
At the foot of the Monte Catria Massif (1701 m), lies Frontone, a small village in the Umbro-Marche Apennines, with a healthy and mild climate year-round, surrounded by shaded valleys and lush hills perfect for hiking and walks.
A wonderful panoramic position is occupied by the well-maintained Castello hamlet, which is charming and lively, with bars and restaurants. Not to be missed are Castello della Porta, once a military fortress with a unique bow-shaped design attributed to the architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini, later converted into residential use, the red civic tower, and the churches of Madonna del Soccorso and Santa Maria Assunta. A majestic metal cross is placed at the summit of Monte Catria, representing a territory to be explored with walks, horseback riding, and/or cycling (Frontone is a stop on the Ciclo Appenninica Alte Marche). It is also possible to reach the summit of Catria with the ski lifts, which lead to ski slopes, a bike park, an adventure park for children, mountain huts, and hiking trails.
The typical product of Frontone, not to be confused with piadina, is Crescia De.CO. Its recipe has been passed down from generation to generation according to farming traditions. It is cooked on a grill, placed on glowing embers, and spread with pork lard on both sides. The filling, made with cold cuts, cheese, and vegetables, makes it a tasty and complete meal. Local cheeses and meats are also worth trying.
The most notable events are: Flavors and Scents of Spring, the Crescia and Spignolo Mushroom Festival in May; in July, the Palio del Conte, with a challenge between the districts; the Porchetta Rabbit Festival in August; and Santa Claus’s Castle - Christmas Markets from late November to December.
