Between alpine lakes and mountain rivers, Lombardy offers numerous opportunities for water sports enthusiasts. From rafting to canoeing , sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing, the region offers experiences suitable for both beginners and more experienced sports enthusiasts, thanks to the presence of schools, specialised centres and qualified instructors. From the great pre-Alpine lakes to the Alpine valleys crossed by streams and rapids, each area has different characteristics that make it suitable for both the most experienced sportspeople and those who want to try these disciplines for the first time. The presence of specialised schools, qualified instructors and well-equipped centres also allows you to practise the various activities safely and to choose routes and courses suitable for all ages.
Rafting and canoeing between the Adda and Brembo
The Valtellina is one of the main destinations for those who want to go rafting in Lombardy. Just over an hour from Milan, along the Adda River, between Piateda and Castione Andevenno, you can choose routes suitable for all levels, from the most challenging rapids – the most adrenaline-pumping stretch is definitely the one along the III and IV degree rapids in Boffetto in the municipality of Piateda – to the quieter descents ideal for families along the stretch connecting Piateda to Castione. Val Brembana is also very popular for rafting and canoeing on the Brembo River: the routes pass through natural gorges and historic villages such as San Giovanni Bianco and San Pellegrino Terme, offering exciting experiences in contact with nature. In Castione Andevenno, throughout the summer, we would like to point out that you can even paddle in the moonlight. To carry out the activity safely, we recommend always contacting the equipped centres.
Sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing on the lakes of Lombardy
The great lakes of Lombardy are a point of reference for sailing sports. Lake Garda, particularly in the Gargnano area, offers ideal conditions for sailing thanks to the constant winds that have made the basin a venue for major international competitions. In September, thanks to the Centomiglia, the lake also becomes the setting for one of the most important sailing races in Europe, to be precise the longest in inland waters in Europe. Lake Iseo, especially in the towns of Marone, Pisogne and Lovere, is also a popular destination for windsurfing enthusiasts. If you are a beginner, we recommend that you be accompanied by a certified guide. Technical equipment, transport and insurance can be provided by the instructors. Upper Lake Como, with towns such as Colico, Gera Lario, Dervio and Dongo, is one of the most popular destinations for kitesurfing, thanks to the favourable wind conditions and the presence of specialised schools and clubs. The ideal area for kitesurfing is the Alto Lario. Another strategic point is along the coast of Mandello.
Experiences for beginners and families
Many locations in Lombardy have equipped centres that organise courses, guided excursions and activities suitable even for those who have never practised water sports. It is generally possible to rent all the necessary equipment directly on site and rely on certified instructors who accompany participants during the various experiences. Numerous rafting and canoeing routes include calmer stretches designed for families with children and groups of friends, while sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing schools offer individual or group lessons for beginners. Before leaving, it is advisable to check the minimum age, level of difficulty and booking of activities, especially during the summer months, when demand is higher. This way, you can enjoy a day in the open air in complete safety, taking in some of Lombardy's most spectacular landscapes.
