Teatro alla Scala

Overview

The prestigious international theater in Milan

It is one of the most important opera houses in the world, built on the ashes of Teatro Ducale by will of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, and inaugurated in 1778. In 1812, thanks to Rossini, La Scala became the theater of Italian melodrama. However,  the composer who - more than any other - is linked to the history of La Scala is Giuseppe Verdi. In 1842, Verdi celebrated his biggest triumph with Nabucco, thanks to the strong patriotic feeling that the opera stirred in the people of Milan at the time, due to the tumultuous period of Italian Risorgimento. This event reinforced the popular roots of melodrama and its link to La Scala. Over time, the theater hosted Italian and international artists. The best known in contemporary times include names such as Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Diana Damrau, Cecilia Bartoli and conductors such as Claudio Abbado and Riccardo Muti. Located in Piazza della Scala, with its 2030 seats, every year it inaugurates the new opera season, on December 7th (Sant'Ambrogio Feast Day) with the "Prima", a well-known and glamorous event attended by artists and famous figures from the world of entertainment and beyond. A symbol of artistic excellence, Teatro alla Scala is involved in a variety of initiatives and activities, from the Accademia Teatro alla Scala to partnerships with other companies and cultural promotion activities including the possibility of visiting its historical archives, museum and even the Theater itself.
