Overview
Inaugurated in 1747 and rebuilt after the two fires that destroyed it (in 1806 and 1824), it is one of the oldest theatres in Italy. Named after Amilcare Ponchielli (1834-1886), a composer born in the province of Cremona, it has a neoclassical façade and a horseshoe-shaped interior, with three tiers of boxes, decorated with gold and ivory stucco. Its season is packed with opera, concerts, drama and dance, as well as pop music events. It is the venue of the Monteverdi Festival, for Baroque music enthusiasts.
