Overview
The museum in Porto Maurizio, which is well named 'City of Sailors', is located in the former general warehouses in the Borgo Marina next to the harbour. The history of the city is interwoven with that of navigation, telling the story of the millennial relationship between mankind and salty water. The structure of the warehouses alone immerses the visitor in a seafaring atmosphere, and wandering through the rooms arranged on two floors, it is possible to retrace both the history and memories of the Ligurian tradition, as well as the tale of a glorious past from navigation in the Columbian age, to the Cape Horn epic and the era of the great geographical explorations. Four routes deal with man's work on the sea, war on the surface and beneath the waves, commercial or leisure travel, and sport, sailing especially, related to the sea.
The exhibitions are complemented by a new Planetarium, unique in Liguria and the third largest in Italy. Technologically advanced systems for digital projection and three-dimensional video vision provide an immersive experience of living among the stars and seabed.
