Straddling Liguria and Piedmont
Between the towns of Masone and Mele, a few kilometres from the border between Liguria and Piedmont, the Turchino Pass curves wind along their way. This Apennine pass, one of the lowest in the entire mountain range, is only 588 metres above sea level. It takes its name from the overhanging Monte Turchino, where the Gorsexio valley ends and the Ceresolo valley begins. Its importance has grown enormously since the late 19th century, when the Turchino road was first opened, replacing the route travelled until then.
The curves of the pass provide unforgettable thrills for motorbike and bicycle enthusiasts. Those who prefer hiking to two wheels can try their hand at the trail along the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri, connecting Passo del Turchino with Passo del Faiallo. The route is varied, touching on several points of interest, such as Monte Dente, Forte Geremia and the Cappelletta di Masone. Don't forget to look up and take in the panorama that surrounds you, embracing the Ligurian coast on one side and the mountain peaks on the other.
