Church of the Most Holy Saviour

Church of the Most Holy Saviour in Terracina: Two Architects and Three Domes in Borgo Pio

The Church of SS. Salvatore is located on Via Roma in Terracina, in the part of the city still known today as "Borgo Pio", which was damaged during the Second World War. The church was the result of an urban renewal project promoted by Pope Pius VI at the end of the 18th century.

Two architects, half a century of work

The original design is by Valadier, who between 1790 and 1796 drew up plans for a central-plan church. In 1830, Antonio Sarti resumed its construction following a different design: three naves, side chapels, and an apse with an ambulatory. The church was completed in 1847.

Ionic columns and a Pietà by Canova's pupil

On the outside, the building is raised up on a podium, with a hexastyle pronao on steps, featuring Ionic columns and a triangular pediment. At the rear, the bell tower is attached directly to the apse. The exterior features three domes, the largest of which sits at the centre of the transept. Inside, the Pietà by Cincinnato Baruzzi, a pupil of Canova, is well worth a visit.

Practical information

The church is located at Via Roma, 04019 Terracina (LT).
