The Ludus Toy Museum

The Ludus Toy Museum in Sezze: playing like in the olden days in the Lepini Mountains

Ludus is an ethnographic museum with a focus on traditional toys. Located in Sezze, in the heart of the Lepini Mountains, it was inaugurated on June 9, 2007. It is the result of collaboration between the "Orso Rosso" municipal toy library, the Luigi De Rosa Cooperative, and the Museum Anthropology Laboratory of the "La Sapienza" University of Rome.

Humble toys, rich memories

The collection includes numerous toys from local popular tradition: spinning tops, slingshots, reed flutes, rag dolls, carts, flying propellers. These objects were crafted from simple materials (leaves, stones, branches, buttons, cotton spools, cans) and partly reconstructed from the testimonies of the area's elderly residents.

A journey through the seasons

The exhibition is organised as a journey through the four seasons of childhood in the Lepini region. It begins with Autumn at school; moves on to Winter with the traditional Sezze carnival masks of Peppa and Peppalacchio; Spring brings up outdoor games, like marbles and downhill cart racing; Summer brings slingshots and tales of the "saettone" (a local snake). Eighty drawers hide ethnographic micro-installations. At the entrance, Eddie, a monster made from recycled plastic, welcomes visitors.
