The Church of St Andrew

The Church of St Andrew in Ronciglione: medieval ruins and the Anguillara bell tower

Located in Via del Borgo di Sopra, the Church of Sant'Andrea is now in a ruinous state, but has a distinct historical trajectory. Constructed in the 12th century in the Gothic style—likely on top of an even older church dedicated to St Leonard—it served as the ancient Collegiate Church of Saints Peter and Catherine until the early 18th century. Once the collegiate seat was transferred to the newly built Duomo (Cathedral), a long decline ensued. In the 19th century, repeated delays in necessary restoration works accelerated its final abandonment.

The bell tower and the stones of Vico

Today, the external shell, a few fragments of columns and capitals, and the bell tower remain visible. The tower was restored in 1436 by Count Everso degli Anguillara under the direction of Master Galasso De Anna. It is four stories high, and adorned with lancet (single-light), mullioned (two-light), and three-light windows, capped by a final octagonal tier. The jambs of the first-floor lancet window feature fragments of a marble chancel screen decorated with interwoven bands, which in all likelihood originated from the destroyed settlement of Vico. The inscription recording the year of restoration and the coat of arms of the Anguillara family are still legible on the façade.
