Porto Romano

Overview

The wonderful result of human ingenuity

Ventotene island, located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, is a place of great charm and natural beauty. One of its most precious treasures is the Roman Port, also known as Porto Vecchio, a work of ingenuity that shows how the characteristics of a region can be expoited while respecting it and not distorting it, to create something wonderful. The port was built in Roman times, when the island was used as a place of exile for undesirable political figures, and it was carved entirely out of rock.

The result is a basin that is, on average, three metres deep and well protected from winds and storm surges, a safe place to shelter boats and collect fish from the sea for nutrition, by keeping them alive in special tanks. In addition to a place for boats, covered spaces and storage areas were also created for boat repairs and the necessary materials.

Today, you'll find diving schools, restaurants and small bars in the cave spaces. The Roman Port of Ventotene is a place of great historical and cultural interest, but also of great beauty. It offers a breathtaking spectacle when the sun sets on the sea and the port lights come on, creating a magical and evocative atmosphere.
