Located halfway between Rome and Naples, the ancient city of Fundis owes its name to the plain of the same name, surrounded by the Ausoni and Aurunci mountains and open to the south towards the Tyrrhenian Sea, where its settlement stands. The surrounding hills feed the water table of the entire area, which is therefore fertile and very rich in water. In fact, agriculture has always been the driving force of the local economy and has led to the emergence of numerous tertiary activities dedicated to the trade and logistics of local products. Of particular importance is the MOF, one of the most important fruit and vegetable markets in Europe.
In the last twenty years, tourism has also grown thanks to the historical features, food and wine and the beaches of the coastline, which attract many visitors every year.
The historic centre of the city houses important monuments from the pre-Roman, Roman and medieval periods that testify to the richness of these places.
Take some time to visit the Cathedral of St Peter, built in the 12th century on ancient pre-Roman structures, the collegiate church of Santa Maria Assunta, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Heaven or the Church of St Dominic with its beautiful cloister. Also worth a visit are the Church of San Francesco and the convent, built in 1363, and the majestic Baronial Castle of the Caetani, built between the 13th and 15th centuries, with the adjoining Palazzo del Principe, reopened to the public after a lengthy restoration.
For lovers of mystery and legends, then, a visit to the "Casa degli Spiriti" in the area called "La Giudea" – named after the Jewish community that has lived there for centuries – is a must.
