The Great Fountain in Grotte di Castro: the 19th-century fountain that came back to life in 2013
The Fontana Grande is located in Piazza Cardinale Carlo Salotti, along Via Roma, in Grotte di Castro, in the province of Viterbo. Inaugurated on 13 June 1886 and tested by engineer Mazzanti on 10 July 1887 — as two plaques on the façade recall — it is considered an remarkable architectural treasure.
A story of water, silence, and recovery
For many years the fountain remained inactive. On 8 December 2013, after extensive recovery and restoration work, water began flowing again from all the basins. Modern lighting and a new hydraulic system were added. The recovery was not merely structural: the idea was to give the town back a piece of its history, a way to pass on to new generations an awareness of the land where they were born and of the need to preserve its heritage.
