The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Succour in Cori: the story of a miracle and a view of the sea
On the slopes of Monte Ginestra, the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Soccorso (Our Lady of Succour) looks down over the town of Cori. Its history begins in 1521, with the miracle of a little girl. This led to the building of a chapel, and later the present building. In this special place, the gaze drifts all the way to the horizon.
The girl of the miracle
The story is that of Oliva Iannese, just three years old. Lost on the mountain, she was found after eight days, and told of having been fed and protected by the Virgin Mary. Her fate, however, was a moving one. She died shortly afterwards, and her remains were laid to rest in the first chapel built on that very spot.
From wall to frame
That chapel of 1521 was only the beginning. The present sanctuary was built more than a century later, between 1634 and 1639. The original fresco remains — the Virgin enthroned with the blessing Child — detached from the wall to protect it from the damp.
Visiting today
Today the complex is entrusted to the Trinitarian Fathers. The sacristy, filled with votive offerings, bears witness to centuries of faith. But it is the panorama that steals the scene. The steps from Piazza Signina are challenging, but the view over the Circeo headland and to the islands beyond makes every step worthwhile.
The sanctuary can also be reached by car. Admission is free, but for opening times and services it is advisable to contact the Pro Loco of Cori. The main feast day is held on the second Sunday of May.
