Mascherone Fountain

Mascherone Fountain in Caprarola: the village fountain bearing the city's coat of arms

Located in the historic centre of Caprarola, along Via Dritta, the Mascherone Fountain (Fontana del Mascherone) has stood there since 1563, although its current form dates back to a reconstruction in 1853. Carved entirely from peperino (local volcanic stone), it is set against a high wall: a central mask sits under the arch, with two smaller masks on either side. At the top, the coat of arms of Caprarola is flanked by two large cornucopias.

Built with the remains of a gate

According to tradition the fountain was built using materials from the Porta Nuova that once stood in the immediate vicinity, which has now vanished without a trace. For a time, the fountain was simply called "la Fonte" (the Spring).
