Bolsena

Overview

On the northern shore of the lake of the same name lies the village of Bolsena. Overlooking this enchanting stretch of water of volcanic origin, the village has a soul deeply linked to this element: in the middle of the lake, then, there is the small Bisentina Island, which can be visited and from which there is a splendid view of the village. The cuisine is also typical of the lake and the most famous dish is the eel, with which the traditional soup is prepared. Vernaccia eel was also a favourite of Pope Martin IV, who is said to have eaten a great deal of it, so much so that Dante Alighieri mentioned it in his Divine Comedy, consigning him to Purgatory, obviously in the gluttonous circle, precisely because he could not give up this sin... of gluttony!
