At the southern end of Canavese, where, at the gates of Turin, the morainic hills gradually begin to shrink, lies the small town of Caluso, known throughout the world for its native Erbaluce vine, from which three of the most appreciated and recognisable white berry wines of the peninsula are made: the Erbaluce of Caluso, Caluso Spumante Metodo Classico and Caluso Passito. It seems that at the origin of this excellence in food and wine lies the particular geological composition of the local soil, where pebbles of glacial origin prevail, and the mild and protected climate, thanks also to the humid atmosphere created around Lake Candia, a small basin of water a stone's throw from Caluso. All that remains is to book a tasting session, choosing from local wine shops, restaurants and cellars, to taste a glass of Erbaluce, ideal to accompany freshwater fish and white meat dishes.

Lake Viverone is the largest and most touristic of the lakes of the Ivrea moraine amphitheatre, a fascinating area of water and hills of glacial origin. Mainly frequented for its beaches, as well as for water sports in fine weather, this stretch of water is actually worth a trip at any time of the year, not only for a stroll along its lush shores, but also to admire the prehistoric pile dwellings that have been found around the municipality of Azeglio. In fact, among the reeds, poplar groves and marshes on the southern shore of Lake Viverone, you can see what remains of about 5,000 wooden poles, driven into the lake water during the Bronze Age, to build primitive dwellings and pedestrian platforms on top of them. Since 2011, Unesco has protected the Azeglio pile dwellings together with other prehistoric pile-dwelling sites in the Alps.

Impressive natural views, architectural beauty and shimmering stretches of water characterise the Valle dei Laghi, a fascinating valley between Lake Garda and Trento, north of the village of Sarche. The Conero Bay Oasis of pure beauty south of Ancona, along the Conero Riviera. A narrow strip of white pebbles plunges into the crystal-clear sea in which the brilliant white and unspoilt cliffs are reflected. You will immediately fall in love with Portonovo. The beach, about two kilometres long, alternates between free stretches without services and bathing establishments where beach umbrellas and sunbeds can be rented for a more comfortable experience. The more adventurous, on the other hand, can enjoy long walks along the shoreline or diving and snorkelling in the turquoise waters. Reach Lago Grande and Lago Profondo, two brackish basins created from the mix of salt water from the sea with fresh water from the springs and the Ciresa stream. Nature, but also history. Not far from the pier stands the Napoleonic Fort of Portonovo, erected in the early 19th century to defend the city of Ancona from raids. Today, it is home to a hotel and a restaurant. Continue to Torre di Guardia, or Torre De Bosis, a military outpost ordered by Pope Clement XI. Finally, the Church of Santa Maria di Portonovo will give you a splendid view of the sea.

A sort of an uncharted territory in regards to mass tourism, Molise, which lies between the regions of Abruzzo and Apulia, is a region that hosts numerous art treasures, breathtaking natural sceneries, and thousand-year-old traditions. A very characteristic aspect of Molise is its network of tratturi, the ancient grassy paths of transhumance from the pre-Roman Era up to only a few centuries ago, our ancestors traveled these trails, driving their animal herds from season to season. Livestock transhumance, the principal mainstay of the Southern peasant, was (and is still, in some cases) based on a very rigorous journey from the cool mountain pastures of Abruzzo in autumn, to the hot and humid Apulian Plateaus (where they reverse direction in summer).

These are the magnificent scenery of the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato, where the great Italian wines of Piedmont, Barolo and Barbaresco, are produced. This jewel of Piedmont with its seductive landscapes has become part of the World Heritage List of Unesco.

Ancona is made up of sea and hills. To pedal along this itinerary is to experience a duel between your head and your heart. The former requires you to keep your eyes on the tarmac, the latter to lift your gaze; towards the hills, the fortifications and the terraces that will enchant you. Three sceneries in one Wide and sandy beaches, interspersed with cliffs and long stretches of rock: we are on the Riviera dei Fiori, in western Liguria, where the hills covered by Mediterranean scrub run down to the sea.
