A rich and varied natural environment characterizes the territory of Maniago, and several walking and cycling routes, which extend from the town center into the surrounding areas, allow for a conscious and slow-paced discovery of the area.
The nerve center and heart of Maniago is the large Piazza Italia, where the main historical buildings stand, such as the Cathedral, in late-Gothic style, the Loggia with its three large arches, the Palazzo D'Attimis Maniago, whose walls are adorned with frescoes of the Venetian lion, symbolizing Venice's dominance, the 18th-century Madonna Chapel, and the beautiful fountain, dating back to the mid-1800s and now a symbol of the city. From the square, a pleasant walk through greenery, enriched with panels that illustrate its history and reconstruct its structure, leads to the Castle.
Maniago can justly be considered the Italian capital of cutlery. It is renowned for the production of knives and all kinds of cutting tools, a very ancient tradition (dating back to 1453) still alive today (an interesting example is the story of artisan Fulvio Del Tin, known worldwide for forging weapons used in blockbuster films such as Braveheart and Robin Hood). This tradition is told and testified by the Museum of Forging Art and Cutlery, located in the building that once hosted the first large knife factory in Maniago.
The local specialty is pitina, a mixture of aromatic herbs and meat from pork, deer, goat, or sheep. Among the events, we highlight the Carnival of the Kids (one of the most famous in the region), the summer festival Maniago in Festa, and especially Coltello in Festa, a major event dedicated to the activity that made the city famous, with exhibitors, workshops, and demonstrations of some of the main crafts, organized by local expert artisans.
