Maniago

Overview

The first written document mentioning the name Maniago dates back to 12 January 981, in which Emperor Otto II confirmed to Rodoaldo, Patriarch of Aquileia, the possession of some lands, including the cortem que vocatur Maniacus: the court called Maniago. Its strategic position allowed the town to play an important role in the road context that led from the plains to the mountain passes, through the valleys of the Cellina, Colvera and Meduna streams. Maniago developed considerably in craft activities, becoming the armoury of the Serenissima (Most Serene Republic of Venice) thanks to its peculiar craftsmanship. The town offers both historical and nature trails, dedicated to walking and cycling enthusiasts, on different levels of difficulty.
