Overview
Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club
Situated in the Park of the Picentini Mountains and in the Sele Valley, the most important natural characteristic of Caposele is water, and in particular the Sele springs. The Water Museum tells stories about people and the local territory through this precious resource, while the Leonardo Da Vinci Machine Museum presents some of the artist's inventions. Don't miss out on the Church of the Madonna della Sanità, the artistic temple of San Lorenzo and the springs of the Sele River, the starting point of the Apulian Aqueduct. In the hamlet of Materdomini we find the Sanctuary of San Gerardo Maiella, with its unusual Sala dei Fiocchi and the Museo Gerardino, a place much loved and frequented by worshippers. The area lends itself to numerous outdoor activities in nature, such as walks along the trails of the River Park, the Ring of 7 Fountains, and the Ciclovia dell’Acqua, a cycling and hiking route of about 500 km. Particularly interesting are the Stones of Memory, 15 stones in symbolic places equipped with QR codes that allow you to see and listen to video accounts of what happened on 23 November 1980, when a terrible earthquake struck Irpinia.
Particularly delicious among the local typical products are matassa, homemade string-like pasta in varying widths and lengths, made from durum wheat semolina flour and soft wheat flour, amaretti (toasted hazelnut biscuits) and muffletto bread. Among the events are the Feast Day of San Gerardo Maiella on the 16th of October, the Sagra delle Matasse (Matassa festival) on the 9th of August, and the Christmas Market on the first weekend in December.
