Tremusa Caves

Overview

Surrounded by history, nature and myth

According to legend, the name comes from the presence of three female statues representing three Muses, later stolen during a plundering. According to another myth, pagan religious rituals took place here in ancient times: the nymphs would welcome virgin maidens to celebrate the last night before marriage with music and dancing. Whatever the truth may be about the Tremusa Caves, we can certainly say there is still a mysterious atmosphere in these caves.

One cannot help but be intrigued. Today, these caves 530 metres above sea level in the province of Reggio Calabria are a destination for history and geology enthusiasts. Reach the caves by walking along the nature trails from Scilla, Favazzina and Melia and enter these caverns that seem almost sculpted by hand with all their stalactites and stalagmites.

Admire the fossil shells, set in the vault of the caves like jewels. From here, let your gaze wander to the Straits of Messina and the Costa Viola through evocative views.
