Castel Savoia

Overview

Just outside Gressoney-Saint-Jean, immersed in a coniferous forest, is Castel Savoia, an early twentieth-century residence designed by Emilio Stramucci for Queen Margaret of Savoy, a great lover of this Aosta Valley area. It is a curious turreted building, in medieval style, clad in local stone, and inside it retains the original decorations, but not the furniture, and a beautiful oak staircase. On the first floor there is the queen's living quarters, from which you can enjoy the splendid view of the Monte Rosa massif. Adjacent to the castle, there is an alpine garden with a thousand mountain plants and lush blooms that cover an area of about 1000 square metres. This is where the Passeggiata della Regina (Queen's Walk) begins, a hiking route of about 4 hours and 30 minutes that crosses the entire Gressoney basin halfway up the mountainside, touching Lake Gover, the hamlet of Tschemenoal, Gressoney-La-Trinité and Staffal.
