Overview

The Museum of the Aosta Cathedral Treasury, located in the ambulatory of the sacred building, offers a broad perspective of 13th-18th century Aosta Valley art, combining the rich treasure of the Cathedral with pieces from various parishes in the Valley. Among the most remarkable artefacts is a cameo of Roman origin set in a gold frame with gems and pearls from the 13th century, used as a buckle for the cope. Also of importance is a consular diptych of Honorius, a testimony to late Roman art. Equally important are the Gothic sculptures including the ancient carved wooden antependium from the 13th/14th century. The museum also houses a rich collection of goldsmith products, including French Limoges art objects and precious reliquary busts engraved in silver and adorned with crystals and stones. There are some valuable pieces, such as the large reliquary case of St Grato, the manufacture of which, initially assigned to Guglielmo di Locana, was completed after his death by the Flemish Jean de Malines. The collection also includes a series of marble sepulchral sculptures, produced in the 15th century by the Valdostan artist Stefano Mossettaz.
