Overview
There is evidence of a church dedicated to St Mary in Castiglionchio as early as the 10th century. A document from 1066 reports a donation, made by Gisla, widow of Azzo, to the monastery of San Pier Maggiore, including this church, along with others in the Rigranese area. Later, from the 12th century, the church came under the control of the owners of Castellonchio Castle, until it became part of the parish of San Lorenzo a Miransù in 1436, together with the monasteries of Santa Maria in Rosano and Santa Maria in Casignano.
