The "pearl of the Valdichiana" is one of the most extraordinary examples of medieval urban planning with concentric road rings and an elliptical shape: these two definitions would be enough to visit Lucignano, a small village in southern Tuscany.
Not to be missed are the Municipal Museum which houses the Albero d'oro (Golden Tree), a 260 cm high reliquary, a unique example of medieval goldsmithing, the Church of St Francis, with its suggestive fresco known as "The Triumph of Death", the church of the Misericordia, with fine works, the sanctuary of the Madonna delle Querce, designed by Giorgio Vasari, the Collegiata church, with its beautiful staircase by Andrea Pozzo, and the Fortress, on a hill not far from the town walls.
Events that animate the village include the Maggiolata Lucignanese (last two Sundays of May), with the village filled with flowers, the parade of flowered allegorical floats, the historical procession, music and folklore. Every Thursday in July and August in the historic centre of Lucignano there is a market for hobbyists and typical local products and every Thursday has a different leitmotif that characterises the evening. The Sunday before Christmas, on the other hand, the ancient Ceppo Fair is held, with many exhibitors, a popular festival with a sober but cheerful character.
At the table you can enjoy excellent typical products such as extra virgin olive oil, honey, meat and cured meats of Chianina and Cinta Senese, Valdichiana red wine DOC. Also noteworthy is the valuable production of handmade ceramics.
