Overview
Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club
Chiusi descends from the ancient Etruscan city of Chamars, which under the reign of Porsenna was rich and powerful. Today, numerous documents of that extraordinary period remain in the Labyrinth and in the Etruscan National Museum, a veritable treasure trove of Etruscan finds, Greek and Roman ceramics, coming from the territory. Among the many jewels, the sarcophagus of Laris Sentinate Larcna stands out, with galatomy (3rd century BC). The museum visit also includes the Etruscan tombs of the Lion, Pilgrim and Monkey and the early Christian catacombs of S. Mustiola and S. Caterina (3rd century AD).
Also worth a visit is the Cathedral of San Secondiano, dating back to the 6th century and rebuilt in the 12th century in Romanesque style, with an adjacent Cathedral Museum, with numerous finds, objects for liturgical use, tables and works. From the museum one descends to the Labyrinth of Porsenna, a network of galleries, traditionally the burial of the king, in reality the rest of the Etruscan aqueduct. Also worth visiting the Civic Museum "The underground city" with routes and three sections (Labyrinth, Epigraphy, Production activities).
Not far away, we point out the Lake Chiusi, an area of naturalistic value and a destination for pleasant sports or gastronomic trips. Among the typical products not to be missed, theolive oil DOP Terre di Siena and wine (Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG, IGT Toscana).
