Monte Specie

Overview

Spectacular views of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo

Why not treat yourself to an excursion to Monte Specie, in the Braies Valley in Trentino-Alto Adige, to see the Tre Cime di Lavaredo mountain range from a brand-new perspective? This easy-going, three-hour excursion is suitable for the whole family, and offers an unforgettable experience along the 10-kilometre route, with spectacular views at the end.

It starts from the Prato Piazza car park at an altitude of 1,979 metres, which you can reach by car or bus. You should then take forest road 37 towards the Rifugio Vallandro mountain hut, at 2,040 metres. Continue along trail 34, which leads to the Monte Specie pass at 2,200 metres.

From here, you can enjoy sweeping views over the Dolomites, Croda Rossa, Croda del Becco, Tre Cime, Cadini Group, Marmolada and Monte Cristallo. You can return by the same route back or continue to the summit. The best time to arrive is just before dawn, to enjoy the sunrise over the peaks.

Along the route, you will see an Austro-Hungarian building, built opposite the Rifugio Vallandro along the former border with Italy and used until the First World War. On Monte Specie, at 2,307 metres, there is a cross commemorating the Val Pusteria freedom fighters.
