Porto Rotondo

Overview

Porto Rotondo

It was 1965 and Porto Rotondo (round because the bay it overlooks is round) was an almost deserted village, made up of just a few houses and surrounded by wild, uncultivated nature. Along came the vision of Counts Niccolò and Luigino Donà delle Rose, who, together with friends, architects and well-known sculptors, began planning the expansion of the village to make it a tourist destination for high society. And the idea certainly worked. Aristocrats, film and show business personalities, industrialists, intellectuals, artists and men of letters began to arrive. The urban layout is a clear and nostalgic reference to Venice, the Counts' city of origin. It is no coincidence that the square around which the buildings are positioned is called San Marco. Between luxury hotels and sumptuous residences, the international jet set still move around Porto Rotondo today, mixed with tourists looking to relax on the magnificent beaches of the Costa Smeralda.
