Peschici Castle

Overview

Perched on a cliff guarding the Garganican coast. Remodelled in the 18th century, the castle was built by the Normans between the 10th and 11th centuries to defend these lands from Saracen and pirate attacks, and was also the residence of the monks of the Tremiti Abbey. During the reign of Frederick II, to reinforce its defensive function, the tower known as the "imperial fortress" was built, followed by the baronial enclosure. Today, the castle is privately owned, but it is possible to visit its dungeons, which were once used as prisons and for storing weapons, where it is possible to view some torture instruments, pieces dating from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. After the weapons, more calming is the small terrace garden overlooking the sea.
