Cutrofiano

Overview

The historic centre of the village of Cutrofiano enchants with its architectural and cultural beauties, such as Palazzo Filomarini (also known as Palazzo della Principessa), the Church of the Immacolata and its Chiesa Matrice dedicated to Santa Maria della Neve. But the heart of the village and its identity lie in the ancient practice of working with clay: in fact, its name derives from 'cutrubbi', the vases made from this material, and even today the village is known for its artisanal production of ceramics and terracotta. The village is the most important centre of ceramic production in the Salento and this material culture is guarded and narrated by the Museo della Ceramica (Museum of Ceramics), which contains treasures ranging from prehistoric to contemporary times. Also worth visiting are the Parco dei Fossili (Fossil Park) and the Museo Malacologico delle Argille (Malacological Museum of Clays), housed in an old quarry.
