Overview
Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club
Immersed in the green of the Daunian Apennines, the village of Alberona is also known as the “village of water” due to the abundance of springs in the surrounding area.
The medieval historic center has been marked by the presence of the Templars, the legendary warrior monks. The visit could start from Piazza Civetta, where the Church of San Rocco in neo-Gothic style stands, and then continue, crossing the main street, to the Mother Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, built by the Templars, as evidenced today by the bell tower, which was a military tower, and two stone slabs bearing the emblem of the Knights of Malta. By taking Via Torre, you can reach the Tower of the Grand Prior (12th century) and wander through the winding alleys, refreshing yourself with the cool waters of the Fontanella, shaped like a house.
Other sights include the Calabrese Arch, the only wooden arch in the area perfectly preserved, the Church of San Giuseppe from the 16th century, the Arco dei Mille, the monumental Fontana Muta (19th century), and the Municipal Antiquarium, with relics dating back to the early 20th century. From Muraglione, you can also enjoy a wide panoramic view of the Tavoliere plain, extending to the Gargano and the Tremiti Islands.
