Santhià

Overview

Exploring history and rice fields

In the province of Vercelli, the municipality of Santhià boasts an ancient history. The relaxing landscape of the surrounding rice fields makes for the perfect backdrop for excursions, hikes and bike rides. But the centre also offers numerous sites and places that are well worth visiting.

A walking tour of the historic centre can only start from the famous Parish Church of Sant’Agata, which houses a Romanesque crypt. We recommend exploring the vault of the nave, full of stunning frescoes. Other main attractions include the Castle of Vettignè, which was built in the 15th century along the Via Francigena. For a contemporary touch in the midst of history, you can visit the Gallery of Modern Art.

The municipality’s main folkloric event is undoubtedly the Historic Carnival of Santhià, an allegorical event that dates back to 1328 and is internationally recognised by the Ministry of Culture. Beginning on Epiphany and lasting until Ash Wednesday, the festival follows a programme of ancient rites and ceremonies and features traditional masked parades.
