Orazio Gentileschi. A painter on a journey

This important exhibition is dedicated to the painter Orazio Gentileschi (Pisa 1563 – London 1639), one of the greatest Italian artists of the 17th century, father of the equally famous painter Artemisia. The extraordinary pictorial quality of Orazio Gentileschi captures the legacy of the late Tuscan Renaissance, with clear, bright colours and the influence of Caravaggio's naturalism. The art of this master was rewarded with success in his lifetime equal to that of Caravaggio, Rubens and Van Dyck, and with lasting renown among patrons, international collectors and rulers: among them were Charles Emmanuel I of Savoy at the court of Turin, Maria de' Medici, queen of France, Philip IV of Spain, and Charles I of England. Orazio Gentileschi was therefore already considered in his time a master of international scope, also because he was active in prominent artistic centres, at Italian and foreign courts.
