Monforte d'Alba

Overview

The roots of Monforte d'Alba's history go back as far as the 13th century, the period to which the first layout of the town dates. Monforte was the territory of the Del Carretto family, who kept it until the 18th century by having a noble palace built on the ruins of the ancient castle. A very special building is then the tiny amphitheatre known for its perfect acoustics, used as an auditorium and dedicated to the famous pianist Horszowski: since 1986, major jazz, classical and film events have been organised here, enlivening the village evenings. Finally, a macabre historical curiosity: it seems that some Cathar heretics stayed in Monforte, imprisoned and taken to Milan by order of Archbishop Ariberto d'Intimiano, and condemned to the stake in 1028.
