Alto Molise is the ideal destination where nature and tradition blend harmoniously. In this region, beech and fir forests conceal hidden hermitages and unique delicacies such as the precious white truffle.

The term "Alto Molise" does not have a precise geographical location and does not represent an administrative subdivision, but rather the part of the hilly mountainous area that lies to the north of the province of Isernia. It includes many municipalities, among which the lively Capracotta, which dominates from its 1421 metres above sea level, and the municipalities of the UNESCO MAB (Man And Biosphere) reserve of Collemeluccio-Montedimezzo, an ancient Bourbon hunting reserve, now protected for its extraordinary biodiversity.

Here is a fascinating 3-day itinerary starting from the tourist port of Marina Sveva, a nautical stop on the Trabocchi route, to discover the small villages of Alto Molise.

In these places, the "cultural landscape" and the "natural landscape" blend harmoniously, intertwining a myriad of elements that constantly interact with each other.

Alto Molise is the land of trekking. Most excursions take place in the shade of ancient beech woods or along high and airy ridges. Mountain bikers will also find their paradise here, among the Turkey oak and fir woods, with itineraries that cross the Tratturi, the ancient transhumance routes and forgotten villages.

Day 1

From the Marina Sveva tourist port to discover Altissimo Molise

From the Marina Sveva tourist port to discover Altissimo Molise

Sailing along the  Rotta dei Trabocchi, you can dock at Marina Sveva in Montenero di Bisaccia, a modern port that embodies the authenticity and richness of a territory made unique by its people, who have always been attentive to a healthy culture of hospitality and who always surprise with their professionalism and reliability.

A few kilometres away, the towns of Marina di Montenero, San Salvo Marina and Vasto Marina offer wide beaches and numerous beach establishments. Hotels with SPAs, bars, restaurants, pizzerias, ice-cream parlours and trendy clubs are all nearby, making Marina Sveva the ideal place for a holiday combining fun, relaxation and authentic flavours, all within easy reach of the port.

The strategic location of the port also allows daily excursions to the spectacular Tremiti Islands, loved by Lucio Dalla, and the wonders of the Gargano, or cruises to the fascinating Croatian coastline, easily reached with stops at the nearest islands.

Marina Sveva is also the perfect starting point to discover all the wonders that the inland has to offer.

With your back to the sea, turn towards the mountains and follow the road, gallery after gallery, bend after bend, immersed in fairytale panoramas. Majestic sanctuaries hidden in green valleys and mediaeval villages such as the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Canneto, imposing defensive cliffs such as those of Pietrabbondante, characteristic hilltop villages such as Castelverrino or villages with a rich history and fascinating location such as Poggio Sannita. As you enter these villages, you will be fascinated by how people can live so far from modernity, following unimaginable rhythms and always keeping a genuine smile on their lips.

The first day of this itinerary end in Agnone, a charming centre in the province of Isernia. Here you will find a wide range of accommodation and restaurants to suit all tastes, offering a well-deserved rest after an intense day of travel.

Day 2

Agnone: The Artisan and Gastronomic Heart of Alto Molise

Agnone: The Artisan and Gastronomic Heart of Alto Molise

Agnone, a town in Alto Molise, is a place where history, charm and elegance come together in a unique combination. With a bell-making tradition recognised throughout the world, it offers a rich food and wine culture and an exceptional artisan past.

The combination of Agnone and cheese is well known. The town is home to numerous producers who organise guided tours of their dairies and maturing cellars by appointment, an unmissable opportunity for food lovers.

But Agnone's food and wine tradition is not limited to cheese and salami: the town also boasts an excellent confectionery tradition. It is easy to book a visit to one of the local pastry shops and experience a gourmet adventure that will enrich your stay.

Agnone was once famous for the art of coppersmithing. The sounds of the copper foundries once echoed in the surrounding woods. Today, although the old foundries are no longer active, a few brave artisans continue to carry on this ancestral tradition, organising guided tours in a dedicated museum.

Another important tradition is that of the Campanara. The Marinelli foundry is one of the most fascinating stops: in addition to a museum rich in historical artefacts that tell the story of this tradition, a visit to the foundry will reveal the curious and interesting process that transforms bronze into bells. If you have time, before continuing your journey, take a dip in the Verrino river. In the past, its banks fed the mills, irrigated the fields and were essential for the numerous copper processing workshops, the "ramere", that sprang up along its course. Today it is possible to take relaxing trips along the river, a perfect opportunity to escape from the stress of everyday life.

Capracotta, between sport and gastronomic traditions

Capracotta, between sport and gastronomic traditions

The journey to discover breathtaking landscapes, ancient artisan traditions and food and wine delights continues with a stop in Pescopennataro. Situated at about 1200 metres above sea level and surrounded by forests of white fir, red fir, beech and Turkey oak, this village is famous for the ancient tradition of its local master stonemasons, earning it the nickname "the stone town".

Leaving the town, you come first to the forest of the "Abeti Soprani" with the hermitage of San Luca and then to Prato Gentile, a place that offers activities for every season. In winter it is a paradise for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and children's snow parks; in summer it becomes an oasis of adventure and relaxation.

Along the provincial road that links the ski resort of Prato Gentile to the centre of Capracotta, you will find the Garden of Apennine Flora. This garden is situated in an area of exceptional natural beauty, with a view that includes the Mainarde, the Maiella and the Matese. It is one of the few examples of a "natural botanical garden" in Italy: most of the botanical species present are spontaneous and endemic to the Apennine flora, preserving the authenticity and naturalness of the landscape.

You will then arrive at Capracotta, an important climatic and sporting centre with two ski resorts immersed in the misty landscapes of the Apennines. In winter, the snow often covers the roofs of the houses, while in summer the cool air makes this town an ideal refuge. South of Capracotta, the peak of Monte Cavallerizzo (1524 m) is fortified with an impressive stretch of cyclopean walls that are still visible and well preserved.

The day ends with a delicious dinner based on local pecorino cheese, grilled lamb and boiled sheep with aromatic herbs, to which Carovilli dedicates the Sagra de La Pezzata.

Day 3

Trails in the Heart of Molise: Discovering the MAB Reserve Alto Molise Montedimezzo and Carovilli

Trails in the Heart of Molise: Discovering the MAB Reserve Alto Molise Montedimezzo and Carovilli

The journey continues to Vastogirardi and the MAB Alto Molise Montedimezzo Reserve, where trekking, hiking and mountain biking can be enjoyed.

Then we reach Carovilli, a town famous for its truffles and cheeses.

The territory of Carovilli is hilly and offers a panorama of great natural interest. Here, large expanses of pastureland stretch out between soft reliefs covered with woodland vegetation, creating a highly evocative scenario.

The town is divided into several hamlets, the largest of which is Castiglione.

From one Morgia to another, as far as Trivento

From one Morgia to another, as far as Trivento

Back in the car, you can visit Pescolanciano, where you can admire the imposing Castello d'Alessandro, one of the most beautiful in Molise, Bagnoli del Trigno, a village divided between the 'terra di sopra' and the 'terra di sotto', and Pietracupa, which dominates the surrounding valleys.

These municipalities are part of the “Parco delle Morge Cenozoiche”, a spectacular natural park where it is possible to lose oneself among the monumental millenary rocks, the Morge, imposing testimonies of the geological activity of our planet.

The headquarters of the park is in Trivento, the final destination of the itinerary, situated on a hill along the Trigno river that separates Molise from Abruzzo and exposed to the east, south and north winds.

A stone village awaits us, from the monumental fountain to the splendid staircase of San Nicola, where no less than 365 steps, one for each day of the year, line up one after the other. The most important buildings of the village stand on its sides and it has always been the symbol of welcome in Trivento, representing one of the most beautiful flights of steps in the whole of Molise.
